Causes of brain injury

What are the causes of a brain injury?

Moore Blatch Solicitors have managed successful compensation claims for a wide variety of brain injuries; with diverse causes.

Brain injuries are commonly caused by external trauma to the head or internal, cellular issues. These issues can have devastating effects on a person’s physical and cognitive abilities. The exact nature of the symptoms will depend on the type of injury.

Traumatic Brain Injuries

Traumatic brain injuries are caused by external force which damages the skull, and thus the brain, or causes the brain to move inside the skull.

The common causes of traumatic brain injury

  • Road traffic accidents
  • Workplace accidents
  • Slips, trips and falls
  • Acts of violence
  • Military accidents

Non-traumatic or acquired brain injuries

Non traumatic brain injuries are caused by illnesses and other cellular issues which create pressure on the brain.

The causes of non traumatic brain injury

  • Stroke
  • Oxygen deprivation
  • Tumour
  • Illness (forms of cancer)
  • Brain infections
  • Other infections

Traumatic and acquired brain injuries occur after birth. Most affect a localised area of the brain, although closed head injuries can cause damage to multiple parts of the brain. This is known as a diffuse brain injury.

The severity of the injury depends on the nature of the cause.

Young children and elderly men and women are at high risk of brain injury although the most at-risk group are males aged from 15 to 24. This demographic is most likely to participate in high-risk activities and are most susceptible to the major causes of traumatic brain injury.

Road traffic accidents

Vehicular collisions are one of the major causes of brain injury and they don’t just affect the drivers involved in a crash. Collisions involving cars, motorbikes and bicycles affect drivers, passengers and pedestrians; and they happen every day.

Workplace accidents

Serious injuries are often caused by accidents in the workplace, particularly in the manufacturing, industrial and construction industries. Many of these incidents are caused by slips, trip and falls, accidents involving heavy machinery or falls from height.
