Deafness

Deafness can occur gradually over a period of time or can be sudden. There are many situations that can result in hearing loss or deafness, however there are two fundamental types of hearing loss:

  • Sensorineural hearing loss – caused by damage to the part of the inner ear called the cochlea or the auditory nerve, as a result of injury.
  • Conductive hearing loss – sound is restricted due to a blockage such as earwax, glue ear or a build-up of fluid due to an ear infection, a perforated eardrum or a disorder of the hearing bones.

There are certain groups of people who are particularly at risk of developing noise-induced hearing loss including employees who work with noisy equipment such as pneumatic drills or compressed-air hammers, or people who work in noisy environments like nightclub staff. There are also risks of acoustic shock, an exceptionally loud noise such as an explosion for certain workplaces.
